Ilioinguinal neuralgia can have many causes, the most common being damage as a result of abdominal surgery, pelvic surgery, and hernia repair surgery.

The symptoms in ilioinguinal neuralgia usually consist of an unpleasant painful sensation in the lower abdomen and groin, radiating to the upper inner upper leg and to the genitals. Patients often complain of a severe burning and stabbing pain.
