A stellate ganglion block is an injection of local anesthetic around the stellate ganglion in the neck area. The stellate ganglion is a nerve bundle belonging to the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) that provides innervation to the head and arm. The goal of the injection is to relieve pain and increase circulation to one side of the head, neck, upper arm and/or upper chest, most often caused by Complex Regional Pain Syndrome.

All injections are performed under fluoroscopy (x-ray) or ultrasound-guidance or both.

What can you expect after the injection?

Pain reduction is often noted immediately. The duration is variable, and can increase with repeated procedures. You will generally recover from the procedure within one hour
